Eboni ac Eifori


Eboni ac Eifori, which is Welsh for Ebony and Ivory, was started by Matthew Robertson when he left Bristol University in 2008. Wishing to be a World Banker just at the time banking was going through a rough patch he could not find a job initially. At Christmas 2008 his mother was making some old recipe fudge for friends and family and Matthew suggested that she started selling it, as it was so good. She rejoined that it would be a good project for him whilst waiting for the perfect job. Matthew sourced the ingredients, labelling and kitchen inspections, approached two local retailers and was off and running, in February 2009.

In the autumn of that same year he went on a 6 month unpaid internship at the House of Commons and from there was accepted to train as a Chartered Accountant in London. His Father, now the sole proprietor, had been made redundant, and took up the reins and additional products were added and seasonal varieties and new labelling introduced. The number of outlets stocking the product is now over 80 and rising, and the company has expanded into England.

All the product is totally home made, on the hob in Pwllheli, the market town of the beautiful Lleyn peninsula in North West Wales. It is made to a traditional Welsh recipe. Realising that production would be limited Andrew installed a second 4 ring hob, re-designed the kitchen to accommodate a preparation and a packing area and purchased Shelf Ready Boxes to facilitate the expansion drive. The home kitchen has now become too cramped for the demand.

A small unit in Pwllheli has now been leased and needs to be fitted out for production and packing capabilities of 1,000 packets per week. Additional staff will be sourced and trained to the standard required. The Taffi Triog won 2 gold stars in the 2011 Great Taste Awards and the Vanilla Fudge has won a Gold Star in the 2012 Great Taste Awards.

Andrew has a BA (Marketing) degree from the City of London Business School and has worked for Express Dairy/Eden Vale, Robertson Foods, Nestle and Green Shield Stamps amongst other fast moving consumer goods companies.
